Greek Riots - The Angry Mob

Monday, December 8, 2008

I usually try to stay away from politics, but I can't do it any more. I'm so fumed right now I feel hotter than a playmate! Instead of compiling my best-of 2008 list, I feel as if I'm about to grab a baseball bat and start smashing things. Why is that? In case you haven't heard, fresh clashes have broken out between police and protesters across Greece for a third day, after the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old by police on Saturday. According to BBC, hundreds of students battled police in Thessaloniki, while protests also turned violent in Trikala, the port of Piraeus, and on the island of Corfu. Five demonstrations are planned in major cities later, including a mass rally by the Communist Party in Athens.

Of course Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has gone on television to appeal for calm. He said that "extreme elements" were taking advantage of the situation to engage in vandalism and pledged to compensate businesses damaged. Mr Karamanlis has already written to the dead boy's parents expressing his profound sorrow and vowed to stop "such a tragedy" from happening again. YEAH RIGHT!!!!

A post-mortem is being carried out on the body of Alexandros Grigoropoulos to determine the trajectory of the bullet that killed him. Two police officers have been arrested in connection with the incident. The officer who fired contends it was a ricochet from a warning shot, but witnesses told Greek TV it was a direct hit. Why am I 100% sure that the killer will get away with it? Cover-up anyone?

Of course the opposition parties are capitalising on the national sense of outrage. No shit Sherlock!

Mr Karamanlis condemned the attacks on property by rioters as unjustified and said he had asked the economy minister to ensure that those who had suffered losses would be compensated. Greek business owners have been horrified at the damage inflicted across the country. Banks have been a particular target. Hmm, I wonder why.

According to the BBC correspondent, Mr Karamanlis's unspoken message to Greeks at large is that if you do not stop rioting you will pay for it through your taxes in the end. How bloody typical!

And what's on TV? Which VODAFONE branch got burnt etc. WTF?

I've had ENOUGH of this! In their "land where democracy was born" the State shows its real face. At times like this I feel that the dystopian vision of the future presented in Nine Inch Nails' Year Zero is not that far away. So, the next tunes are dedicated to:

  • The poor 15 year-old boy who got killed so young.

  • The "brave" policemen who are here to protect us all. Your watching too many Rambo films may prove hazardous to our health.

  • The politicians that keep on feeding us with lies, sucking our blood like some hip vampires with Armani suits (thank God they come in XXL, too). BTW, does blood have so many calories or are they just FAT?

  • The ignorant people that keep on voting for them.

  • The Greek priests that wear more gold than 50 Cent, Jay-Z and Lil' Wayne put together (and do good business, too - if you're looking for some good real estate agency give them a shout).

  • Every poor Greek guy who has to waste a whole year of his life peeling potatoes and mopping floors in the army (hey, at least he gets 8,90 euros per month).

  • The TV stations that keep on showing trash on TV.

  • The idiots who watch this trash. Read a bloody book you retards!

  • The mob who hide under their hoods and trash everything because they CAN! There are other ways to show how macho you are, you know. Now go home and play TEKKEN or Grand Theft Auto, will you?
PS. I do not favour or justify ANY SORT OF VIOLENCE. Of course there is a difference in between protesting and just destroying everything. So, putting the blame only on the police is not a panacea. If you DO want to protest do it in a civilized manner. Burning down poor people's property is not the solution, as these people are not the ones to blame. I'm not trying to be politically correct here, but that's what differs thinking people from animals.
