Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, The Rope is the post-punk outfit of Jesse Hagon (vocals), Mike Browning (guitar), Sam Richardson (bass), Matt Evans (drums), and Paul Teravskis (synths, keys). Their gloom-laced songs incorporate the brooding bass lines, spiky guitar riffs, and aggressive percussion parts found on records by Killing Joke, Bauhaus, The Sound, The Sisters Of Mercy, and The Chameleons, while the layers of lush synths bring to mind Roger O'Donnell and The Cure.
However, there is more to this quintet than pure homage to their dark forebearers; The Rope have learned the lessons of alternative rock circa 1978-1984 extremely well and transcend their influences to give their own ambitious take on the sound that defined this rather bleak era. With Hagon's baritone croon in residence and martial drums that scream Martin Hannett from a mile away, the band's debut EP showcases some tight musicianship and proves that the future is anything but doom and gloom for this talented lot.
