Cicada is an indie-dance band from London, comprised of Aaron Gilbert (also known as Mr Natural), Alex Payne, and Icelandic vocalist Heidrun Bjornsdottir (formerly of Gloss and 4AD’s Gus Gus). Utilising live instruments and old skool synths, their sound can be described as electronic pop with a touch of rock ‘n’ roll swagger. To get the picture, imagine Blondie jamming with Can, New Order, and The Sugarcubes, Cocteau Twins and Slowdive adding the sonics, with Daft Punk and Quincy Jones at the controls of Paisley Parks mixing desk. Their remixing skills are also worth mentioning, with bands like Depeche Mode, New Order, Editors, and 13 Senses seeking their assistance.
Following the success of their self-titled debut (2006), Cicada are about to release their sophomore album Roulette on 25 May 2009 through Critical Mass, preceded by the single Metropolis on 18 May 2009. With territories such as Japan, Holland, Australia, and many more picking up on the buzz that first emanated from the UK, Cicada’s take on intelligent, song-based electro is becoming an unstoppable force. Give them a listen.
