Detachments are a London-based new wave / synthpop troupe led by the creative force of Sebastien Marshal. Taking their musical cues from early ’80s minimal wave along with bands such as Fad Gadget, Cabaret Voltaire, The Human League, Joy Division, and New Order, they create bleak soundscapes built around pulsating electronic grooves.
However, beneath the melancholic backdrop for the themes of love, loss, and isolation that run throughout their songs, Detachments retain a certain pop sensibility that can be overly infectious, thanks in part to James Ford’s (Simian Mobile Disco) excellent production. So, if sneering vocals combined with icy synths, screeching guitars, and sparse drum beats are your cup of tea, get a copy of the band’s self-titled album, embrace the dark, and dance like it’s 1981.
