Formed only a year ago, Londoners Kites have already been compared to indie electro pioneers such as New Order, O.M.D., and Talking Heads. The quartet of Matthew Phillips (vocals, guitar), who brings an air of Wildean decadence to the band, Taio Renee-Lawson (guitar, bass), Richard Baldwin (electronics), and Jack Newton (percussion) are ready to take the world by storm with their Joy Division meets Donna Summer synth laden anthems.
It only takes a single listen to the band’s demo EP to understand why Peter Hook hand-picked some chaps who describe their sound as “melodramatic provocation for discontented dreamers” to support him in his upcoming Unknown Pleasures gig at London’s Scala next April. So, if HURTS are way too sappy for you or you prefer a synthpop band with cojones, look no further. Are you listening Mr. Flowers?
