Founded in 2000 by singer / songwriter William Wilson, Seattle-based Legion Within blend darkwave and industrial into their own distinctive genre of dark rock. The current line-up of Wilson (vocals, guitar), Shannon Cole (guitars), Erica Butler-Branch (bass), Aaron Nicholes (percussion), and Jasyn Byrum (synth) is a steadily rising force in the arena of modern music, complete with the KMFDM seal of approval.
Legion Within’s musical evolution has been natural, yet immense. Debut album Ayumi, which was called, “beautiful gothic atmospheres with an airy ethereal feel“, segued into 2004′s goth-rock-akin-to-The Chameleons Aeons. As a drastic change in America’s political climate had been boiling underneath, so had a nearly visceral response from key band members Wilson, Cole and Butler. This expression was showcased in 2007′s The Empty Men, with tracks titled Fascisti, Rise, and Wrath of the Empty Men.
Two years later Legion Within are back with Mouth of Madness (out June 16th on KMFDM Records), a brooding mosaic of musical genres and styles set to be their breakthrough release. Featuring Wilson’s romantic tenor vocals and his minimalist and ebo-laden guitar style, this is a record destined to haunt the iPods of the dark flock. The songs range from romance, escapism, and tragedy to tongue-in-cheek humor and flights of sadistic fancy. If you are fans of Bauhaus, She Wants Revenge, Pornography-era Cure, David Bowie, and Gary Numan, you have just found your gloomy soundtrack for this summer.
