Masquer is the Stockholm-based dark pop duo of Kicki Halmos (Lowood, Idoru) and Pelle Lundqvist (Idoru). Together they create brooding cinematic soundscapes by mixing shimmering electronics, sweeping melancholic melodies, and dreamy shoegaze guitars with marching drumbeats and rumbling basslines. Kicki’s haunting vocals might bring to mind Liz Frazer, Siouxsie Sioux, or Zola Jesus, but the whole package is beamed straight out of The Cure‘s Pornography.
At the moment Masquer have released only a self-titled EP, but hopefully there will be plans for a full-length album in the near future. So, if you are looking for a band that amalgamates a witches’ brew of ’80s post-punk and ’90s shoegaze into an ethereal, sophisticated, and self-sufficient dark whole, you have just hit the jackpot.
