Solemn Novena

Solemn NovenaBelfast rockers Solemn Novena were formed in early 2006 by Louise Crane (vocals), Marc McCourt (guitar, vocals), and Stuart Harland (guitar). Their mission: to create guitar-oriented gothic rock, leaving out all the techno bleepy influences or metal posturing that are pretty common nowadays. This had to be straight down the middle goth, just like the ’90s had never happened. Or this century either.

The Irish trio’s sound brings to mind The Mission and Rosetta Stone with some bits of The Cure, The Smiths, Lush, and The Cult thrown in for good measure. After releasing the brilliant As Darkness Falls EP (2006) that featured haunting keyboards and vocals, 12-string guitars with lots of reverb, and loud, pounding bass lines, the band is about to release their highly anticipated first full-length album Kiss The Girls sometime this year. I guess it’s time to unleash the bats…
