The Cribs are an indie four-piece from Wakefield, England. Formed in 2001 by twins Gary and Ryan Jarman and their younger brother Ross, the siblings recently welcomed the legendary Johnny Marr (ex-The Smiths and Modest Mouse guitarist) as the official fourth member of the band.
Initially tied to other like-minded groups of the early ’00s such as The Libertines by the British music press, The Cribs have often been labeled as lo-fi due to their unpolished sound and staunchly purist approach to recording. After three moderately successful albums (The Cribs 2004, The New Fellas 2005, Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever 2007) filled with intelligent lyrics on a background of clipped guitars and tumbling drums, the Jarmans return with their best offering so far. Ignore The Ignorant is still full of big choruses, but it’s Marr’s jangly guitar riffs that add gravitas to the band’s adrenalised indie. Well done Johnny, mission accomplished.
