The Mary Onettes are an indie rock band formed in the town of Jönköping, Sweden in 2000. Inspired by guitar pop from the ’80s and indie bands from the ’90s, Philip Ekström, Henrik Ekström, Simon Fransson, and Petter Agurén were successful in putting out one EP with Sony/BMG before being dropped. Instead of splitting up or getting depressed though, they kept on writing music and finally got picked up by the Labrador record label, where they released the Lost EP and their eponymous 10-track debut album.
Sounding like a mixture of Echo & The Bunnymen, The Cure, The Smiths, New Order, and The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Mary Onettes (2007) received positive critical acclaim and its release was followed by extensive touring around Europe. After another EP (Dare), the Swedes are now putting the finishing touches to Islands, their sophomore album, scheduled for a November release. A new tour is about to follow, so make sure to catch them live and experience their joyful retro hooks for yourself.
