The Organ was a Vancouver quintet, formed in 2001 by Katie Sketch (vocals), Debora Cohen (guitar), Ashley Webber (bass), Shelby Stocks (drums), and Jenny Smyth (Hammond organ). In a short space of time, this all female ensemble gained rapid exposure with the release of their first EP Sinking Hearts in 2002, followed by their first proper album, Grab That Gun two years later. A critical and popular favourite, The Organ wrote melodic and introspective music based on layered interplay between their instrumentalists, drawing comparisons to the underground and brooding sound of The Smiths, Joy Division, and The Cure.
Although they managed to produce a relatively sizable fan-following and their future seemed very promising, on 7 December 2006 the band released a statement on their official site stating that they were breaking up. Now, less than two years after their breakup, the band released one last EP of unreleased material titled Thieves.
