Hailing from Northern San Diego, White Apple Tree have created a unique and refreshing take on modern post-punk and synth-rock music. The band was founded in 2007 by Ryan Lawhon (vocals, guitars, and keyboards) as a solo project, and would later include his brother, Taylor Lawhon (keyboards and vocals), and Stefan Mac (drums and vocals), with the intent to bring a new sound into the local music scene.
After recording a five song EP called Taste the Celebration that was produced by analog purist Ronnie Martin (Joy Electric), the trio began touring alongside names such as Shiny Toy Guns, The Delta Fiasco, and Innerpartysystem in an effort to meet the high demand of critical and popular acclaim. Velvet Mustache – aka their eagerly awaited debut album – was released last April on 37 Records. With lush ambient guitars, blasting dance beats, quirky synths, vocal melodies, and influences ranging from Joy Division and Tears For Fears to The Knife and Interpol, this record easily stands out as one of the best releases of the year. I can't believe it took someone half way around the globe to tell me about a great new band in my back yard who did a $5 gig two days ago less than 15 miles from my house.
Thanks for keeping me current.
Thanks for reading Lila. BTW, if you happen to listen to any new bands that I might like drop me a line, will you?
