Hailing from Arlington, VA, Screen Vinyl Image is the husband-and-wife duo of Kim and Jake Reid, whose ties with Virginia’s long-standing shoegaze scene (Ceremony, Skywave, Alcian Blue, The Offering) perpetuate the tradition of dark noisy destruction layered over well-crafted song writing. Their electrifying sound – a combination of extremely loud guitars, fuzzed-out noise, drum machine beats, and glacial electronics – provides a doom-laden and claustrophobic quality that calls to mind the eternally depressed post-punk heroes Joy Division and The Cure, yet it retains a pop sensibility that is just about audible beneath a Wall of Sound that pays tribute to The Jesus & Mary Chain.
SVI’s themes of hallucinatory dystopia and science fiction motifs will find their way to the record stores in the guise of a new full-length album scheduled for a 2013 release; in the mean time, keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming tape, featuring the single Too Much Speed, the original mix of Stay Asleep, a remastered version of the now out-of-print debut EP, The Midnight Sun, and live recordings.
