The Chapman Family are a post-punk foursome from Stockton-on-Tees, England. Formed in 2006, the band consists of Kingsley Chapman (lead vocals, guitar), Paul Chapman (lead guitar), Pop Chapman (bass, backing vocals), and Phil Chapman (drums). Their angst-ridden high tempo songs may invite comparisons to bands like Placebo, Bloc Party, Interpol, and Joy Division, but they still have something unique which sets them apart from most post-punk revival acts.
Burn Your Town, the band’s debut album, is a tight-rope walk between cold war punk, noise rock, and dark indie that combines charging guitar riffs, sneering basslines, and pounding drums with baritone screams of frustration and discontentment of the disenfranchised. Although its sickeningly reverberated sound and raucous energy can be a bit too abrasive for streamlined kiddie ears, the record has moments of sheer brilliance and gets more effective on repeated listens. It may have taken a while to produce, but at least it proves that these gloom rockers have tons of talent and the necessary songwriting abilities to go along with it. Highly recommended.
