Under The Covers #40

Friday, February 5, 2010

Ska legends The Specials have been announced as the headliners of the Shockwaves NME Awards Big Gig 2010 as part of the Teenage Cancer Trust concerts, so I figured that a cover of Gangster wouldn't hurt. Although ska isn't my cup of tea, I must admit that Archive did a great job with this one... As for the rest, Apoptygma Berzerk deliver an upbeat version of Kim Wilde's Cambodia, War Tapes cover Love And Rockets (remember them?) and Nick Cave does his best Jarvis impression on Disco 2000.

Archive feat. Terry Hall & Benjamin Biolay - Gangster (The Specials cover)
Apoptygma Berzerk - Cambodia (Kim Wilde cover)
War Tapes - Love Me (Love And Rockets cover)
Nick Cave - Disco 2000 (Pulp cover)

Dancefloor Fillers

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

So far I've been making post about new bands, cover and acoustic versions, mixtapes... So how about posting some remixes as well? I knew you would agree :-) Today's offerings come from Editors, Placebo, The XX, and SCNDL. I don't think that the first three names need any introduction; as for SCNDL...

Well, they come from dark streets of Manhattan's west side. Reminiscent and inspired by old Chicago House from the likes of Master C&J, their track Need To Know comes backed up with a devastating set of mixes from across the Atlantic. The UK's Lee Mortimer takes the main riffs and raves it up with his turbulent basslines while Markus Lange & Stereofunk keep it on the deeper side of dark electro. Fukkk Offf wraps up the package with a simple yet effective edit that fattens things up on the bottom while keeping it glued to the floor. You can grab all of the remixes from Beatport here.

Editors  - Papillon (The Japanese Popstars Remix)
Placebo - Every You Every Me (Mr Bronkz Remix)
The XX - Crystalised (Popular Damage Remix)
SCNDL - Need to Know (Markus Lange and Stereofunk Remix)

Under The Covers #39

Friday, January 29, 2010

The first song for today isn't an actual cover but a collaboration between actress Marion Cotillard and Franz Ferdinand for a new line of Dior called "Lady Rouge". I really like this song and felt like posting it so I hope you won't mind the technicalities :-) The actual covers come from Keane, Nine Inch Nails with Peter Murphy and... Avril Lavigne (WTF?). Enjoy!

Marion Cotillard - The Eyes On Mars (Music and lyrics by Franz Ferdinand)
Keane - Disco 2000 (Pulp cover)
Nine Inch Nails with Peter Murphy - Nightclubbing (Iggy Pop cover)
Avril Lavigne - Basket Case (Green Day cover)

Isolated Atoms

Thursday, January 28, 2010

Tipped by many to be the hottest and most professional undiscovered band in the UK, electro rockers Isolated Atoms have come a long way in a short space of time. Formed in February 2008 the band are drawing parallels with many influential acts of the past 25 years such as Depeche Mode, Gary Numan, Bauhaus and a certain band from Manchester. Their intense and moody blend of angular guitars and ice cold synths takes the best aspects of new wave / post-punk and gives them a refreshing twist, resulting in an intriguing brand of electro rock.

These Black Country lads have been hailed by Kerrang! Radio as "the missing link between Joy Division and New Order" and with some proper promotion they are likely to reach stardom in no time. A couple of months ago they released their debut single Tell Me What I Want, a beautifully sombre track saturated in dark eighties drama and swelling atmospheric vocals, and  now they've got Peter Hook (a huge fan himself) to produce their next single The Truth. Now that sounds most promising...

If you like Interpol, Ladytron, She Wants Revenge, Editors, White Lies or indie with conviction (before pretentious disco fashionistas took over) then this band is certainly worth a listen

The Delta Fiasco

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Liverpool’s The Delta Fiasco exude an elegantly wasted allure of expansive proportions. Their blend of clanging guitars, pulsating beats and mutant bleeps emerged from the electronic wizardry of Nick Bentley (synths/programming/guitars) combine sublimely with Nathan Walzack’s (guitars/vocals) twisted falsetto to create an intoxicating rush of head-swirling sound. Smelting avant-garde rock with new wave they have created a "happening" of dizzying originality, a euphorically dark marriage of European electronica and guitars.

Although cited as “Interpol meets The Faint by way of the DFA” The Delta Fiasco will also appeal to fans of Ladytron, XTRMNTR-era Primal Scream, IAMX, White Rose Movement, Nine Inch Nails and Julien-K. After a bunch of aggressively intense headline shows through the UK, the band released their debut album Blood Will Have Blood last October and are currently touring Europe along with Good Shoes and Death By Sunrise. If you fancy a non-stop, high energy, electronic dance show make sure not to miss them. You've been warned...

Death By Kite

Emerging from the Copenhagen underground scene, Death By Kite is one of the best noise-pop bands to come out of Scandinavia for years. Their sound is a tight-rope walk between post-punk and angst-driven indie, a mesmerizing mix of poppish, catchy melodies soaked in a cocktail of noise rock, shoegaze and new wave.

The band released their self-titled debut album in April 2007 under critical acclaim and has since then put out a couple of EPs (Wave I-II) and played numerous concerts thus establishing themselves as a popular live act. Vocal duties and guitars are courtesy of Bjørn Alexander Gøtzsche Lange whose remarkably high, light voice combined with the noisy guitar parts bring to mind Brian Molko and Placebo. Other obvious influences come from the likes of Sonic Youth, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Interpol, Joy Division and stellastarr*. Although Death By Kite Now may be a bit too abrasive for streamlined kiddie ears, they truly deserve a proper listen, take my word for it. Now what about that second album?

Screaming Lights

Monday, January 25, 2010

Hailing from Liverpool, Screaming Lights is the indie rock quartet of Alan Breen (bass), James Connor (drums), Max Goldberg (lead guitar, synth) and James Treadell (vocals, guitar, synth, piano, lyrics). The band bears the same relation to White Lies, Repeater and Red Light Company as those new bands do to Editors, as they did to Interpol, as those Americans did to Joy Division, The Chameleons and the rest of the post-punk long-overcoat brigade of the early '80s. In that sense, if you can live with the lack of invention and fancy dark, doomy indie rock then you'll have a field day joining the dots and drawing straight lines between Screaming Lights and their gloom-rock forebears.

After supporting the likes of Mystery Jets, Vampire Weekend and The Music without having a single physical release, the band finally came out with a couple of bombastic singles that earned them a slot at Reading and Leeds Festivals on the BBC Introducing Stage. Their debut album, Like Angels, was released on 5 October 2009 and featured overdriven guitars, menacing basslines and angst-soaked dolorous baritone vocals that would no doubt prove that these lads shouldn't be dismissed as mere indie landfill fodder. 'Nuff said.

Acoustic Sundays #20

Sunday, January 17, 2010

After a rather long hiatus, Acoustic Sundays are back with my favourite IAMX song for 2009. Church Of England is an emotionally charged acoustic version of Think Of England that is best experienced when it's cold and dark outside (like now). The same goes for Placebo's Holocaust, yet another stunning offering by Brian Molko and co. Last but not least, enjoy two acoustic takes from Glasvegas and The Dandy Warhols. Until next time...

IAMX - Church Of England
Placebo - Holocaust (Acoustic)
Glasvegas - Daddy's Gone (Acoustic)
The Dandy Warhols - Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth (Acoustic)
